You could try,But the drive train could be on the ground in an hour, which would make changing the oil pump easier. But the way why are you changing the oil pump anyway. Steve www.914underground.com

You are right steve, but I just don't want the hassel of droping the motor again. I rebuilt a 2.0 for my 72, replacing the 1.7. I installed a HP oil punp that was given to me. I had to fabricate new gaskets to replace the missing ones. I used to thick of material for the gaskets, this causes a gap between the gears and the body of the pump. The gap provides enough room for oil to leak back between thegears causing little or no preasure.
Purchased a new pump, now I have to replace it. |

Ouch!
If you must keep the engine in the car... I would guess you need to remove the front bottom tinware in front of the motor. Remove the fan, then remove or at least lossen the fan housing. Remove the motor mount bar. Maybe need to remove the shift linkage. Then you could get to the oil pump. Did you know that there was a problem with the high volume pumps. It used to be (and may very well still be the case) that the drive "tang" was 1mm too long and had to be machined down so it didn't put a load on the cam. Personally I feel that ant hp pump that is made out of cast iron is a bad idea in a alum block because of the different rates of expantion, but then again I'm no engineer ![]() |

JP,
I have not looked under the car yet, but if I have to go through all that trouble I might as well pull the motor. I read about the tang length, i filed down the tang by 1mm, hope I do not have that problem. Thanks for your help. |

There is a tech article on Waynes web site about how I fixed a leaking oil pump with the engine in the car. I removed the front tin and fan, unbolted the cross bar, shoved it forward, and you can get to the oil pump. I prefer doing this to droping the engine.
