carpet padding/soundproofing material
 

I am in the midst of addressing some surface rust in the interior and am removing the black material that was between the carpet and the floor pan.

Anyone know what the purpose of this material is? I am guessing padding or soundproofing?

Also, any suggestions on what to replace it with or whether to replace it at all?

FYI- my wife hates how loud the car is already, but then again she doesnt like it for OTHER reasons, #1 being that I spend a chunk of time on it!

Common name: Black Death - for its ability to lift from the channels, crack and seal moisture for a more efective rust out.

The material is mostly for sound proofing. It was hard as it left the factory so it didnt do anything for padding.

I replaced my with rubberized undercoating and seam sealer. Cheap padding under the carpet to your taste.

For a bigger pain, but better sound proofing. Lift the car and degrease the bottom of the pan and apply some more ruberized undercoating. Topcoat with engine enamal for easy cleaning. Remember not to plug the drain holes for the clamshells.

Ya, I know, the "its a roadster" does not fly with mine either ;-)

I remove it and repaint with Hammerite Smooth finish .Use rubber mat cut to shape,Under carpet, that way you can remove it to dry floors. Steve www.914underground.com

I know that feeling....been there, done that. The safer way to get the carpet up is to slide a drywall spackle knife between the carpet and the soundproofing, so it doesn't get pulled up.

Brand new, it's actually fairly flexible and self-adhered to the floor. I believe it was made by Wurth and is still available from places like Automobile Atlanta.
