One more Crane XR3000 / XR700 Question...

I have mine on the back side (passenger side) and have had it for the past five years on a .050 and never had a lick of trouble. Run it with a Bosch blue coil.

Watch out for 2 things. One that as the disp advances it doesn't strech the wire, and two that the wires don't fall into the fan. (I was subject to both...)

Yes, I'm using an XR-700 with a Blue coil without an external ballast. Going to a PS-20 Crane coil and an XR-700 on my V-8 conversion. I received the coil today and they say the XR-3000 must have the ballast and they even recommend it for the XR-700 with this particular coil.

I have had a xr700 w/ a blue coil for 3 years.I mounted it inside behind the pasengers seat where it stays cool and clean.
Ihave not even had to time it again since installation.It works great,and on my next car I am going to use the xr3000 for a little more oomph.

I have a brand new (just came in today) Crane PS20 coil. The instruction sheet notes: "PS20 and PS40 only: If you are replacing a Lucas coil or a Bosch "blue" coil AND you are using points, the original electronic ignition module, or an XR700 ignition module,you must use a ballast resistor." It then gives instruction with the ballast resistor that is supplied with the coil. They then note: You can use the ballast resistor supplied with the coil or a Chrysler style two terminal ballast resistor (Wells CR-107 or DR-794)." Hope all this helps.

Brad- That is true, however, I was so enamored with the trouble free nature of the XR700 on my 2.0 four that when I decided to do a 3.5 V-8 I just naturally looked to the possibility of using an XR700 in my old Delco-Reamy distributor. I am also going to use the Crane HI-6 (6000-6440)plus their 8.5mm "Firewire" ignition wires and the adjustable vacuum pot. I may upgrade to the other system later. We'll see how this works first.
