OT....gamer question...the kids want a ....whatever
OK....I have three girls, 11,11 and 9....they want a game console for the boob tube. I have ALWAYS hated computer games.....so I know next to nothing about them...
Forget Christmas as I will wait till after the stores replenish.....what is a good system that is compatible with a modern wide screen TV....has wireless play stations and can handle up to 4 players at a time and won't kick my a$$ everytime I want to buy a game or do an upgrade......?

I'd suggest either the Playstation 2 (Sony) or X-Box 360 (Microsoft). The X-Box 360 is brand new, has the latest game engine, so you will pay a premium for it. The Playstation 2 is due to be replaced Summer 2006 with the Playstation 3 so it's less money. Both play tons of games. Only a few game titles are made exclusively for only one of the two players.
The most important thing is to check with your TV manufacturer that video game playing won't affect or "burn in" on your TV screen. This can ruin certain plasma, flat screen, and LCD models. VERRRRY IMPORTANT. The other issue is that if your TV is bigger than 50", some games images may affected in sharpness. I remember my Playstation 2 only came with one hard-wired controller. Don't know about the X-Box. I think both the X-Box and Playstation are equiped to handle up to four. If you're determined to go wireless, you may have issues. None of the wireless controllers are quirk free. And none of them are cheap. If you go with the Playstation, remember to buy 2 additional memory cards with maximum memory potential for saving their games. And conveniently for the manufacturers, there is no way to upgrade the system after you purchase. Every "upgrade" means buying an entirely new system, including memory chips and controllers. Sounds like you're in hell. But it's the holidays. Join the club.

Yep, get a PS2.
I spoke with the 3 biggest hard-core gamers I know (my sons) and they recommend the PS2 over the Gamecube (or Xbox, for that matter), and they have all three. There are more PS2 games for kids in your daughters' age group. Even though the PS3 will be out next year, TONS of games are STILL available for earlier PS2's on eBay or any flea market.

Would it not be great that all Christmas gifts had to be home made?
Mike, I feel your pain too. There is way too much junk piled up just because it is 'the season'.

In my opinion the PS2 is still king for now (till the PS3 comes out). I have read about quite a few glitches w/ the new Xbox..i.e. it crashes and freezes just like (other) Windoze puters sometimes do.
Even though you don't like games, Gran Turismo 4 for PS2 is THE BEST driving/racing game ever. Frustrating as hell with a joystick though; you really need a steering wheel + pedal setup.

if you want wireless controllers the xbox 360 is the way to go when stores get more in after christmas. It was designed from the start for wireless. The console comes from the factory with one wireless controller.

Not a tv game but my 9 year old LOVES her new Nintendog DS. The graphics are great and she takes care of her pet dogs better than if they were real, LOL. They are portable and you can link several together...

I vote for the original Xbox, if you are industrious you can change the software to do media center chores like the 360, plus they are getting cheaper now, and those with flexible morals can copy games to an upgraded hard drive and save $$$
PS2 is good too you have to use an adapter for more than 2 players though...
