Bursch Exhaust

My new Bursch was installed and looked good with the glossy black paint. But, after I ran it and got it hot, the paint started to blister and eventually fell off. Now, most of the muffler looks like it wants to rust.

Has anybody else had this problem? Any ideas on what paint won't burn off and still look nice?

Not only did I purchase this because it looked nice (in the picture), but they said it was quiet. Is there really a quiet performance exhaust system?

Thank you.

On my S&S headers I used Barbeque paint and it worked fine. It wasn't the nice gloss of your original Bursch paint though.

Unfortunately, from a quality standpoint, the Bursch muffler is to the OEM muffler what a Kia is to a Rolls Royce.

Its hard to imagine a more poorly made muffler than the Bursch. The steel used is about the cheapest one could get away with with a straight face, the welds are poor and ugly, and the paint is really just barely there enough to prevent it from rusting out while it sits on the shelf.

You can stick some BBQ paint on it, and it may help for a while, but the problem the paint will have is not heat, but stopping the rust.

Bursch is inexpensive, but unfortunately you get what you pay for, and nothing more.

I ordered some POR-20 exhaust paint from aircooled.net back in November. This stuff holds up REAL well. If you cure it properly (ask John C. how when you order it) it won't burn off.

Everybody I've talked to who has used it, swears by the stuff.

I've got the same problem and mine is barely a year old. I too was let down by the workmanship of the product. I really messed up that little sniffer pipe that goes to the EGR valve because the Bursch was so far from where it needed to be. otherwise the performance seems fine.

Ansa, Monza, SuperTrapp, Porsche OE and Bursch were the only options I knew about at the time. Any other suggestions on good street products? I like the look of that Triad from a few posts ago. Where do you find things like this if you're not a racer?

I agree with Steve. Tried about everything before investing in some of that Hirsch 1700 degree paint. Used the paint on the steel exhaust of my wife's Vanagon last summer, and have had promising results through this winter. I live in Ohio, and during the winter,Sin-Sin-nati must get a real volume discount on road salt from Morton Salt. Ask me about the low mileage parts 914 I bought. A car with absolutely no bottom from salty winters, and pristine interior.

After enduring this winter's salt bashing, I have three points of data with the paint:
1. Paint does not burn off (first paint ever!)- Vanagons have some unusual hot spots in the exhaust pipes- An easy way to locate these hot spots is to use wrong paint (VHT paint, regular POR, etc.), run car for a month, look for burned places.

2. Placing paint over rusty pipes (after wire brushing) does provide good protection, but still rusts slowly through the paint.

3. Paint placed on a brand new, well cleaned muffler has no salt damage!

I know what is going to do with the two Bursch systems that I have. I 'm going to strip and repaint both the used and the unused systems with Hirsch 1700 degree paint.

The Bursch on my 912 sounded horrid!!! I went and bought a used OEM muffler at the Dunkel Bros swap meet and my car sounded 10x better. I would definately stick to stock (the guys at Porsche knew hat they were doing!)
