Oil cooler location....anyone done this?

Has anyone hung an oil cooler underneath the screen intake on a turbo
whaletail on a N/A car or on the screen in a 914 engine compartment? The 911
model I have, had an aftermarket a/c radiator/condenser hung there. Since
then the a/c has been consigned to the scrap heap, with some items recycled.

I was considering using the location to attach another remote oil cooler
keeping the stock trombone style in the fender. I like my chin spoiler the
way it is.

As most of you know, the common way to plumb in an external cooler is to use
an adapter plate that sat between the oil filter and engine. The plate
bypassed the filter sent oil to the cooler and then returned it to the
filter then back into the engine.

I was thinking of using a cooler fan combo and doing the same bypass and
return trick. I know that the engine is a warm place and that the engine
intake air would be preheated, but it would solve a lot of plumbing and
other problems...

I know Tim Hannum used this location for his a/c unit in his 914, but
looking for oil cooler users in that location....

Anyone have any opinions on this?

Hi Mike -
On my 2.0 914 the oil cooler and fan are fastened under a GT deck lid using a sandwich adapter at the oil filter. Beingthat my car is carbed I had plenty of room. I spent a lot of time making brackets for an extremely clean install. The GT deck of course gives the motor all sorts of air intake. The temp never gets above 210-215 on very hot days.

Hi Mike, saw one this past Sat at the 'Q'. I would worry about pumping heated air into the engine compt, although it may only be a little. Front is still best but you already know that.....
