'74 914/1.8. My windshield is cracked, and before I have the insurance company replace it, I want to have a look under the trim to see if there's any rust. Are there any tricks or special tools for removing those trim pieces?

Patience and a 1" putty knife. I would not let the glass company mess with the trim, it bends very easily and will never look the same again if bent. Pick a spot in a corner and start prying very carefully. Once you get the first piece out, it's alittle easier . Make sure you order the trim clips new and clean the mounting surface for the windshield very well before installing the new one. I used B-12 Chemtool to clean the old rubber residue off. There are several options for the windshield gasket, but the glass company has a tube of rubber stuff that starts sticky and gooey and dries hard and watertight. Good stuff but I don't know the name. I found a PPG windshield for $165 installed (they came to me to install it, so I watched and helped). Safelite Auto Glass also had a good deal, but it wasn't PPG glass.
My $.02, and it ain't worth much.
