Anything in particular that I should be aware of when removing the wiring harness from my 914? Specifically - (but not limited to!) are there any areas where the harness is likely to get hungup and damaged, or where it would be advisable to run a "fish" wire/string to help get the harness back through a trouble spot?
Thanks, Craig 73 2.0L |

Craig,
I had dificulty in the area where the harness goes through the firewall and then up through the engine tray. My problem was getting the connectors out/in through the holes provided. I didn't want to take the connectors off, and it can be done with the connectors on. Just take out the wires with the smallest connectors first. and be carful not to damage the boot that goes from the engine tray to the firewall. I didn't remove the entire harness but it looks as though it was started at the firewall and sent forwards. I cant imagine trying to get the wires out of the firewall boot and then back in. While I had the harness out I bought a roll of black hockey tape(cloth tape) and re-wrapped the exposed wires that go into the rear trunk after cleaning each wire. Looks like new! ------------------ CWP/VIR 72 914 L20E in rusto. 73 914 L20E 2.0L in resto. http://members.rennlist.com/a914lover |

The whole harness can be pulled out starting with the tail lights. Then the engine compartment, all these then go through the holes mentioned above. Feed it trhough the center tunnel to the fuse box. The front is the same but I don't think you can do it with the tank in. There is one big grommet above the fuse box that all the wires go through.
It helps to label everything you can as to its location before removal and also take pictures. |
