Best way to adjust tail shift linkage
I have a 72 1.7L with a tail shifter trans. I just replaced all the bushings and it is shifting better. My problem is geting the linkage adjusted correctly. At first I could only get R & 2nd. After messing with it, it shifts fine from R, 1st, 2nd, 3rd but no 4th or 5th! I was reading something on the side shifter and it said something about turning the rod all the way to the right and then tighting it down. Do you guys think that (with some help) I could turn the shift rod under the car all the way to the right where 4th and 5th are while some one puts the gear shifter in the 4th and 5th position and then tighten it? Will this work or is there an easier way.

Try putting the trans in fifth gear, by hand under the car. Then put the shifter on the rod in the tunnel as far to the right as possible and down to where you want it. Then tighten the nut.
