I have a 73 914 and I want to do the 320i caliper conversion. I also have struts from a 72 in my parts bin. I understand that 320i calipers bolt on 72 and earlier struts. However I also have new cross-drilled rotors which have the raised circle for centering the wheel at install time. Will my later rotors fit the pre-73 struts?
Thanks In Advance |

The rotors should fit, but can be a pain if you try to use wheels that are not compatible. That lip can be machined off.
The earlier struts are a bolt on for the BMW calipers. Another trick is to swap out the rears and use the 914 fornts on the rears...bigger pads, but you lose the e-brake. Not a big deal, I did not have one for years. Also look into changing your 25+ year old brake lines and fluids if not already done. Some people will also remove the proportioning valve and replace it with a tee or an adjustable one. Wilwood makes the best. Available from Pelican. It will allow you to adjust the bias of the front to rear brake pressures... |

Nope - late rotors will not fit early struts. The offset of the rotor is different by almost 1/2 in. I bought some beautiful rotors from one of the guys on the Rennlist to do my 5 bolt conversion. His car was a 75, mine is a 72. They were not even close.
Just an FYI Scott S |

My bad...you're right, kind of.
Just checked my parts book...1970-72 up to vin #472 291 9032 are one #, while 72 -76 are the same.... So some 72 front rotors will fit the late model cars. |
