working on the 914 side shifter
I have a late 74 1.8 with the good ol' side shifter tranny, It occasionally pops out of fourth gear, does anyone out there have any comments on what this could mean in terms of R&R , it shifts OK and doesnt grind excessivly otherwise. but the popping out of gear thing doesnt sound good... any ideas,
Thanks, Rkeegan@qualitylogic.com |
As always, try the simple & cheap stuff first. In this case, this means try adjusting the shift linkage. See if there is any slop in the linkage as well. That can sometimes keep you from getting the gear all the way engaged.
If that doesn't help, then chances are the dog teeth on 4th gear are damaged. It may be possible to remove them and file them to shape by hand, but don't count on it. It's easier to buy new dog teeth (and probably sliders as well), but that's expensive. Check the prices: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/9144/por_9144_tranny_main.htm --DD |
Also check Tranny and Engine mounts....
Unlikely since it only happens ocassionally but worth checking ------------------
