Pegged volt meter

I started my car (914 2.0)for the first time in almost a year yesterday. The volt meter pegged, well past 18 volts. It would settle down to 12-14 volts at idle, but would peg whenever I revved the enging. What's up? The car sat idle while it got painted, and I charged the battery the night before.Do I need to replace the alternator.

Put a Volt meter accross the battery while the car is at idle. Should see 13.2 - 13.5
volts... 14 is on the high side.. Race the
engine see if it jumps to 18 or 19
like the gauge reads if yes I would start by
replacing the Voltage Regulator... Do not
drive the car like this you will boil over the battery with readings that High..

I believe this site has a tech Article on

If the volts at the battery is good...no more than 13.5, it could be a bad ground on the meter....

Thanks everybody.
After a frantic call to Tom, I learned what a external voltage regulator is. (I'm a Chevy man) I took the regulator out, slapped it silly and cleaned the contacts. It works fine now. I actually took the car out around the block. You should see the grin.
