ok i screwed up... please help me fix

when i pulled the engine from my 75 1.8, i did not stop there, i wound up pulling the cylinders and painting everything, i did not keep all that careful records of where all the wires go.
i have 2 white wires with spade connectors on them coming out of the harness to the brain, where do they go ? are they grounds, which it looks like they are from the circuit diagrams and if they are where dothey go, the 3 ground points on the top of the engine have other grounds attached

first of many posts

Where in the harness do they come out?

A single wire that is after the first set of injector wires is probably for the head temp sensor. Another one may plug into the resistor pack, if I read the wiring diagram correctly. Alternately, there is a fourth ground wire on the diagram, that goes to the dual relay. I'm not sure where it plugs in--it's been a long, long time since I had to deal with the 1.8 stuff at all.

Be more specific about which wires they are, where they are on the harness and maybe I can help. I have a 75 1.8 harness and the factory schematics.

If it is anything like a 73 2.0 harness...

Mine has three white wires that attach to a ground point at the flywheel end of the case using spade connectors. The ground point is held to the case with one of the case bolts.

If you look at the 73 wiring diagram( http://www.pelicanparts.com/914/parts/Electrical/914_electric_73C.jpg ) at the bottom right corner there are the four injectors with the four ground wirs coming together just below them.

Might be same, might not?

well first the head temp sensor i have hooked up but these wires come out of the harness at the same place as the cold start valve, aux air valce ,etc and i have other wires hooked to the ground that is on the block ( could have these in the wrong place ) they are black and brown (should be grounds ) the ones i dont know about are white

Brown wires would be ground, but not from the FI system usually. Black wires are not brown very often in 914s. The white wires are all FI related.

As far as I know, the only wires that get grounded on the grounding point on the engine are the FI ones. Check the wiring diagram over again.

well there is 1 set of brown wires ( 2 wires ) that have one spade conn and one black ( i know now that the black is wrong )that is attached to the ground and they come out of the harness that goes to the resistor pack and to the relay board plug and then the whites which i now know where it goes

so where does the black go

I have a perfectly in order 75 1.8 and I just went and had a look. What I found is that out of the harnes by the transmission is a pair of white wires that are connected with one spade terminal and a singal white wire conected with a spade terminal and both are hooked on to the ground tab on the engine, My ground tab only has two tabs on it and there are no brown or black wires attached to it. The third white( well technically fourth) is the fuel injection trigger that hooks up to the coil where the tach hooks up to. The best description for that wire is its all by itself running through its own piece of conduit. Good luck. As for the brown and black wires i have no idea what they are for, but i would guess the black is the head temp wire.

Scott, I'll check my harness and the wiring schematics tonight, but please tell me if you have a speed limiter (near the battery)or not...some of the 75 1.8's do, some don't.

I did check the schematic last night, and it seemed to indicate that there are a couple of black wires related to the harness, but I need to check into it further.

all my other wires are right except the black brown and white ones and i dont know what the speed limiter looks like

i think i got it one of the wires i thought was a ground is the power to the relay pack and to the coil ( 2 wires one spade conn )

btw way what does the relay pack do

Ok, here is what I have found out:

The single wire at the first harness joint south of the ECU is a white number 1 wire which goes to the number 1 pole of the coil, it has a female spade lug attached.

The other white wires at midharness are grounds, number 5, 16 and 17 wires.

There should be no black wires or any other color, related to the 75 1.8 FI harness. The black wire I previously mentioned is shown in heavy black on the wiring schematic and does not reflect the actual color of the wire in the harness.

If you have a black wire in the harness, a PO must have rigged it. Sure you are referring to the FI harness and not the engine harness to the regulator plate? You'd have to meter the harness out with a schematic to see where it actually should go.

There are no other wires that exit the harness...all others are wired to FI component connectors.
