Setting initial timing
 

Still can't get my 2.0 started after adjusting the Crane optical unit in the stock distributor. I did not remove the dizzy from the block, but I have now rotated it back and forth several times so that the timing is now just a guess. My question is: to set the timing approximately (enough to get it started), should I set everything at TDC and then rotate the dizzy counterclockwise a smidge to advance it?

If all you're after is "close enough to start it", try TDC. Rotate the motor until you're at TDC, then rotate the distributor until you get a "zap" from the center coil wire. You can use a plug wire and a plug (tape the plug so the threaded part is against a ground) to tell when you get a "zap".

The key should be "on" when you listen for the "zap"...

Thanks, Dave. I followed the procedure you outlined and got a nice strong "zap" at TDC, but the car still does not start. I did find a wire to the cold start valve disconnected and fixed that, but I am stumped. I have fuel pump "whirr", the FI wires to the trigger points in the base of the dizzy are connected, installed a new Bosch rotor and cap, and double-checked the firing order. Hate to have it towed to my favorite Porsche fix-it shop, but...

Three things are needed for a motor to run: 1) Air (or compression). 2) Spark. 3) Something near the right amount of fuel.

Are you getting a spark from the plugs?

Are you getting any fuel from the injectors?

Are the hoses and wires and such all hooked up correctly?
