Question Engine number?

My mechanic said he installed a 2.0L 4 cylinder. I know where the engine number should be stamped, but I can't find a number there. I even looked in the places where they are found on the 1.7 & 1.8, they're not there either.

Is it possible that the engine number could wear off over time? What other way can I confirm what I have?

Thanks in advance.

Not sure if they are still being made, but there used to be several companies that made aftermarket Type IV blocks. One was brazilian. I don't think these had numbers on them, but had the places where you could put the numbers.

Anyway, some ways to tell...look at the heads on the intake side. If it is a 2.0, or at least 2.0 heads, it will only have three bolts there. The air filter assembly is different, I think, as well. Not sure, but if it is a fresh motor, the compression numbers might also give you an idea of what displacement the motor is.

Can't think of really anything else right now that would tell you...if you have access to it, a dyno will tell you what kind of horsepower the engine has, and that could be a reference.

Actually the VW replacement cases didn;t have numbers either. Look at the Type 2. com list for more info.

More than likely you have a factory rebuilt canandian case, but no pomises.

Were all the replacements 2.0L's, and were they designed for the 914 or the VW bus?

Does all the stats for the replacement motor equal that of the original? Is anything gained or lossed?

I am assuming that they had replacement cases for both 914 and Bus, but not completely sure. Also, the case is the same FOR ALL motors for a 914. The only thing that is different is the internals and the heads.
Have you looked at the heads yet?
