I have recently put an original 2.0 "six" with webers (from a 914/6) in my 1976 914. I presently have the four relay board in the engine compartment. I have now obtained a six tachometer and six relay board. I would like to also use the cold start facilities. In order to wire up these components (and electric fuel pump located in front by tank) I need to modify the wiring. What do I need to do?

I did not think there was a difference between the 4 & 6 relay board. On my 6 conversion I had a built in regulator on the altenator so I was able to Eliminate the Relay boad completely. I think in the 914/6
conversion article that is found on this Website there is a section there that talks about making a jumper on the Relay board between 2 pins for the Fuel pump activation. Not sure about the Relay board for a "6" ------------------

Hello
914/6 uses an other circuit board and an other wireloom for the car and the engine. Carwireloom is similar in pins but different coded. Porsche supplied an Interface in the 1972 MY. Enginewireloom has two pins more but you can handle that. Well that interface was 15 $ several years ago. IF NLA then you have to interchange some wires in the socket ( I think four ). To get more wir you have to wind out the loom down to the next "crossing and pull 1" by moving that crossingpoint sideways, Circuitboard has an protection and stabilization relay for the Tachometer. You need that part if you run an old Tach. If not your Tach will jump. Later Tachs didn´t need them. I would get the interface and install the /6 unit as no fiddeling and original look and working. Fuelpumplocation doesn´t mater as long the wire are at the board. 75 fuelpumplocation is an benefit even for /6. As you have the late straight pump you can use the BMW Pierburg fuelpump. If not then cut the wires and apply the original 6,3 silver coatet spade connectors with socket and rubbercover. ( A short in there can burst the pump ) Grüsse |

For the cold start facility, are you talking about the fuel spray bars in the air cleaner housing?
If your alternator has a built in regulator you can ditch the relay board and use a 14pin connector from a 928 to connect the wiring from the engine harness to the main harness. Ok a little figuring out to do but i've done it using the 914, 911 and 914-6 diagrams on pelican parts. Sure hard on the eyes to follow the B/W version of the 914-6 diagram but at least it's available. If you have an early tach, you will need to find a ballast ($$$ new, good luck finding one used) or get your speedo updated to run without one (again $$$ but cheaper than a ballast). The only adaptation i had to do was on the wiring for the 12 pin connector and used the 3 pin connector from the 914 alt and put the wire in the right places. I wired my fuel pump to the fuse box wire with an inline fuse but could of done it by jumping cables either on one of the relays or by jumping 2 wire on the 4 pin connector so the fuel pump runs all the time using the original fuel pump wires. Hello
said coldstartadvice doesn´t need an pin on the board. The power source is the starter Kl 50. From there it ( Yellow ) goes into the thermoswitch mountet in the breather cover. From the switch it ( white/red ) goes to the valve. All connectors are stocked new at Porsche and have very good prices ( 3-6 $ complete set ). Same period Mercedes carry partially similar hardware. Just to mention it there are differences beetween 914/4 -73 / 74 / 75- main wire looms. Grüsse |
