rear trunk

I know this sounds dumb but I just bought a '73 914\2.0 and I just can't figure out how to open the rear trunk.

To open the rear trunk, all you need to do is insert the key, turn it and push in the button. If this isn't working, it sounds like either the lock cam is broken (not uncommon) or the cam is not hitting the latch. If either of these is the case, you've got a bit of a problem on your hands, since you are going to have to remove the trunk lid.

That's a whole other can of worms. I can explain how I did it on my '74 if that becomes necessary.

To open the trunk you need to push in the silver lock button to release the lid. The button will only release the lid in one position. If it does not open, try turning the lock 90 degrees. If the trunk still does not open, you probably have one of two things wrong. The most likely culprit is the cam on the back of the lock. It is made out of pot-metal and will break eventually. The piece is inexpensive but I am not sure how to open the rear trunk once this breaks. I am sure someone call tell you via this bullentin board. The other culprit could be one of the trunk rollers. If the one of the rollers breaks, if often jams the trunk spring and prevents entry into to the trunk. Again, I am not sure how to get in once this has happened. Hope this helps.

The other thing is if your car has the 911 reflector conversion, a 24"+or- red reflector that reads PORSCHE, then you should have an electrical release. Look for a button under the dash or in the center console. As for removing the rear lid, I remember a detailed posting about it somewhere either here or on one of the other two 914 sites, Reagade or Tim's.

Another thing to consider is that a previous owner may rekeyed some of the locks and you didn't get the trunk key.

In the event the problem was/is a broken cam lock, here is the procedure for getting in the rear trunk.

1. Open the engine lid.
2. Looking backward, you can locate the bolts holding the rear trunk lid to it's hinges. remove the 2 forward bolts. This should allow the trunk to move enough so you can now remove the 2 remaining bolts.
3. Lift off the rear trunk. Replace after the lock is repaired.

Hope this is helpful.
