Slightly OT: I need help with a Type IV engine
This isn't completely 914 related, but it is about Type-IV's, and I don't know where else to go. So...
My buddy has a 1972 VW camper bus with a Type-IV in it, about 4 months ago an intake valve broke (cylinder 3), caused a backfire and started an engine fire. He took it to a shop who repaired it (only took 3 months...). Now, we just took it on a road trip and it did great for the first 2,000 miles but then we heard something of a thud and the revs dropped to 0. Removing the driver side valve cover reveals a broken rocker arm on the cylinder 4 exhaust valve. Unfortunately, we didn't realize this right away and tried to turn the engine by hand a few times and tried to start it a few times. We realized it wasn't going to happen and didn't try to force it. What could have caused the broken rocker arm? We were at about 3700RPM. (Engine was rebuilt by Jake with a redline of, IIRC, 4500RPM.) Were we just running it too hard? How much, and what sort, of damage could the broken rocker cause? Did we further break **** by trying to turn the engine? I'm going to take it apart and investigate, and take some pictures; I'm trying to get an idea of what to look for and what parts I am going to need. Also, I was wondering if I could enlist the help of Chicago area Pelicans in putting it back together as I've never worked on a T-IV before. Food and beer will be provided:) If you're interested, please PM or email me at SlowToady@fakelife.com Thanks in advance, and apologies if this is in the wrong forum. |

did it ever make one complete revolution?
tear it apart... b |
Nope, no rotation. I guess that means it's seized huh?
I think I am going to take it out and take the head off tomorrow. See if I can figure anything... |
If you need a 2.0 bus head...I have a set you can have. Just let me know by monday, or else i'll take them to the local VW guy i'm kinda working for.

Sounds like it dropped a valve seat.....
|
Might not be truly siezed, may just have piece of valve or seat stuck in there, pull the heads first

Saw the post on STF--it's a bent valve. :(
