Higher output alternator
Seeing the below post, I need to ask a question in the same vein.
Racing recently I discovered that the stock alternator is not providing enough output to power the car and my fans for the oil coolers. Does anybody have a suggestion for a higher output alternator? I know you can go to a single wire, internally regulated GM alternator but have not been able to determine what vehicle that would be out of. There was a thread regarding that issue some time ago but the individual just named it as a GM 62 amp alternator without naming a vehicle and the guys at my local parts store can only refrence something like this by vehicle make and model. Any help is greatly appreciated. Randy, "car 54 here I am" |
Have you see this thread http://shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=47161 ? I think most GM alternators (for V8s anyway) are pretty similar and the pictures in the thread should help you find the right one.

There is a higher output alt for the VW camper vans, but you need the connector harness as the terminals are not the same as the stock type IV on the 914s. We have one on my daughter's 914 and it is amazing to never see the voltage dip when the lights come on......

Dave Pateman offers the stock alternator rewound to 90 amps contact him at davep@koolatron.com

the vw bus alternator is your easiest conversion; it has the correct mounting; i may have a good one out in the shed left over from when i was thinking about doing this on a car i no longer have

a VERY BIG THANK YOU as always to John Rodgers and Larry.
Courtesy of them I now have a new 96 amp alternator for the 914 from the Volkswagen Transporter. It is a direct fit the only modification was a change to the one electrical connection on the lead to the starter. It was available at Carquest and is guaranteed for one year. It was a mere $150.00 plust tax versus the over $300.00 I had been told by other vendors. THANKS AGAIN!!! Randy "Car 54 Here I Am" G prod Porsche 914 SCCA |
Does the harness use heavier gauge wire to any of the connections ?

Bump - I'm looking for an exact year for the VW Transporter with the 96 amp alternator, and/or a specific part number. Thanks...

Bump
I'd like to know the same thing. I cannot find anything like that at all. |
H.O. Alternator
I finally got around to calling Carquest about the alternator. The salesperson I talked to this time was able to look it up and it shows as being used in a number of Porsche vehicles and the volswagen transporter (Whatever that is).
For those of you looking. The part is at Carquest Auto Parts. Their part number is 14062. States it will fit 1975 to 1979 Porsches, some 914's, and the Volkswagen Transporter. I will try and crawl under the car tonight and see if I can get the OCA part # as well. It required very minor modifications to fit and has run flawlessly so far Randy |
What exactly did you do to the wire? Did you switch it on the relay board or at the alternator? Which wires did you switch?

I think the Carquest unit is for the 924 and 928. The Bosch version is 75 amp.

Starter Wire
The wire for the starter had to small an end connector. 14 instead of 18 if I remember correctly. It was just a matter of changing the end spade to the correct size.
To get the starter to fit correctly I had to move it forward approximately 3/8 of an inch and had to change the end spade (I know that's not the right term but my brain is fading after a long day at work and some other things). That was all that was necessary. Took me about 20-30 minutes. Randy |
