Ran When Parked Advice
Good Morning,
I picked up a 914 this week that "ran when parked" but that was in 1992. The rotors and brake system are frozen solid - I know what to do there. My questions are : 1. fuel system. Should I pull the tank and clean it with a kit (Por 15) or have it done professionally? Replace the fuel lines themselves? 2. What if anything can I do about the injection system (74 2.0)? 3. I will change the oil and filter and turn it over by hand. Should I change the tranny fluid as well? 4. Anything else? Thanks! |

Hey, I just did this with my 2.0! I'd pull the plugs and put a little marvel mystery oil in it and let it sit a day or two before turning it over. also, you might consider disconnecting the fuel tank altogether and runing a new line (temporarily) from a clean gas container to the fuel pump, just to see if it runs, and how many leaks there are.... run a compression test too, for fun to see what kind a shape you are in.
what do you do with the frozen brakes and rotors, as that is my next project?

change all fluids and all hoses (brake lines included). pull the tank and make sure it did not rust out.

You will probably have to change the injector seals, fuel filter too. There is a technique for bench testing the injectors, they are likely to have a lot of gummy crap in them, but if they are salvageable, it will save a lot of dough.
You are going to want to pull the tank anyway, so get some 7 and 9 mm fuel hose, and the blue brake hoses too, new hose clamps and do it all while it is apart.

Testing Fuel Injectors
How can I bench test the injectors?
I did buy both seals, FI hose clamps, and 7mm hose for this weekend. Should I soak the injector? Can I submerge the whole injector? Sorry for all the questions. Frank |
