Knocking/Tapping after rebuild?
 

Hello hello,
So I rebuilt most of my engine. I say mostly because as it turns out I had a real badly cracked head and another one almost as badly cracked. So I got some heads off the same model car, cleaned them up and put them on the motor.
Now I have compression, but there's a lot of noise coming from somewhere on the passenger side cylinder head. It's a really loud knock/tap. The tricky thing is that it get's better with either engine speed, or when the engine heats up. I know I have very good oil pressure. The adjustment screws on the rockers look good. I'm kind of thinking it's an exhaust leak, but there's no carbon build up and all the nuts on the exhaust studs are tight.
I already adjusted the valves twice and it's not getting better.

Check the valve lash first...

Just pull the valve cover off the loud side and see if you have a loose or broken rocker arm.

Also check to see if the top of all the valve stems are about equal in height.
(right under the rockers and on top of the spring and keepers)

If ya have one that is lower than the rest..

Ya probably have a seat falling out or a bent valve (why?) or both.

If not.... Could be a wrist pin, rod bearing, broken ring, (smoke) bent valve, broken guide...etc... Either way... the head would come off.....

Also check to see if the fan is on tight.. cause ya just never know......

After that, I dunno..

Can you isolate the noise further? A mechanic's stethoscope or a piece of vacuum hose held up to your ear may help you figure out exactly where the noise is coming from.

There's quite a bit of hot air (too hot to touch) coming from between the #3 and #4 cylinder exhaust pipes. I'm going to take off that side of the exhaust tomorrow and see if I can find something. I have a sneaking suspicion that I either forgot to put one of the copper rings, or maybe there was already one there and I just put another one.

Man... Now that you think you either have one to many copper gaskets or none one one side...

Brings a ton of differant hypotheses to my brain....

To many to write about.

An exhaust leak it was. One of the threads on the studs in the head was stripped so the nut didn't didn't, no matter how much i turned it. But all is well now and the car purrs like a kitten.

Since I am wrong about 50% of the time...

I am glad you got her fixed.... Sweet...
