help from those of you have been there done this, as i haven't pulled an engine from a 914 in a decade, and then i was just helping....
why do you pull the tranny with the engine - is it that much easier? i don't particularly want this tranny and i would think its easier to just take out the engine.
next, is it really possible to do by yourself - and how difficult, physically? i can usually do all the same stuff as you guys, but...
and yes, i read wayne's article - ok glanced at it and printed it to read at work tomorrow...!

Hey Race: So your gunna do this? I gotta tell ya that the best way would to have a bar-b-q. Have you seen my smilie on the club? You grill the patties and club members pull the M/T.
It realy helps to have a jack for the M/T, I have one just for that. Other than that the artical here is good safe way to pull it off.
As far as phycial effort Linda pulled her M/T. It's not a big deal, it takes more time to make sure everthing is clearing as the engine comes out. Don't forget the ground strap above the tranny.

Will be curious how it goes? I am in the process of pulling a motor out of my project to cure some oil leaks. Pulled one out of a parts car, but considering I want to put this one back in, not sure that one counts? Keep us posted, and I will do the same!

Joe- Linda rocks. Thanks for the encouragement. This is so completely different than anything I'm used to!! Btw, I really like that black car - and it has such nice bumpers!

I will keep you all posted. So far I've managed only to visit with a couple of really big black widows hanging out in the air blower. yuck!

Depends on how high up in the air you get the car. On my car, with my jackstands at their max height, I have to remove the air cleaner, throttle body, oil filler neck, and dipstick. (Found out that last bit the hard way. Happily didn't bend it, but I had to get the whole drivetrain back in the engine bay to pull it out, and then drag the engine out again!)

The drivetrain is held in by two big bolts at the front of the engine, and two big bolts at the back of the transmission. You would have to support the transmission if you were going to leave it in the car, and you'd have to disconnect the motor and then slide it forward off the trans. Not that easy when everything is still (mostly) in position. It's easier just to pull the transmission with the engine, then separate the two once they're out.

I've pulled my engine a few times and it's fairly simple and can be done in a couple of hours. Less time after you know what your doing.

I could not imagine pulling "just the engine" and not the tranny as you would have to seperate the engine and tranny and slide the engine forward to clear the tranny/clutch/spindle type thing.

Since pulling the tranny is not too much more work, I would just pull them togethere. Besides, re-installing the engine to the tranny may be difficult to line up while laying under the car.

Here's how I do it:

Disconnect everything (i.e., fuel lines, clutch cable, all electrical, and also the cv bolts from the tranny, etc..)
I use a furniture dolly and roll it under the engine and tranny. My dolly sits about an inch under the engine.
Then, I undue the rear tranny mounts. When the bolts are about undone, the engine will drop to the dolly and since it's only an inch...no hare done.
Next, undo the engine bar.

The engine will now be sitting on the dolly. After this, I start jacking up the rear of the car - really high. And, I put it on the tallest jack stands that I have. Then roll the engine out from under the car.

I made my furniture dolly out of 2x4's, and casters from Home Depot for about $20

Yeah! Race: Brake and parts cleaner is you friend. The lurking criters in your car don't like very much. That is an understatement. I posted this one at the Club. We sent her off to fine her mates.
