914-6 case numbers, HELP!
Howdy all:
I have a case that is stamped 901/38. The latest addition of Bruce's book states that this is for a 914-6 USA with 5 speed. Now the weird thing is that the serial number is *6407171*. Now the 640 part is good for 69 914-6, but the 7171 is outside the 5781 listed in the pelican tech section (http://www.pelicanparts.com/914/technical_specs/914_chassis_info.htm). Now this site, http://www.928porsche.net/history914w.htm, lists engine numbers all the way out to 8000 but I can't tell if the groupings go together. In other words, the 901/36 types ranged from 640001 to 6400889. If this is the correct way to interpret the chart, then the two numbers don't belong, per se. Can anyone please help me with this? thanks in advanvce, tadd |

I'm pretty sure I am not quilified to even take a stab at it, but where is the number located on the case. Jimmy |
The type number is just to the right of the engine oil thermostat while the serial number is more towards the seam.

Well Tadd , as expected Went and looked at my 6, it is 5133 and has the numbers in the same places. You do need someone with lots of history on factory numbers that also knows case replacement stats. just a knee jerk quess but I would search there.

Thanks for checking your motor. Might I enquire further about where you would search? I am not sure I follow... tadd |
901/38 is a USA spec 914/6 70-72 engine; Bruce Anderson sent me this a long time ago: "Numbers 6400001 through 6400889 were standard 914/6 engines. " My 1970 m471 Euro sixer originally had engine 640 0815, later changed to a twinplug "le mans" engine in 1972

Since the 914/6 is facing towards the bulkhead the engine number is almost impossible to see w/o pulling the motor.....some have cut a hole in the bulkhead for access to the fan belt or alternator.....you can see it then.
