alternator wiring

i have a real simple question, but i dont know the answer. where does the thick wire (mines red) coming from the alternator hook to?

I would still look at the wiring diagram but I seem to remember it going to the starter terminal that has the wire from the battery to it. First though make sure you have a 914 alternator not one from another VW application. The 914 only has a three wire plug and the red wire you talk about, other VW alt have all kinds of other plugs. Of course all the rules may change if you have a L-Jet, all I have experience with are D-Jet and carbs.

it is a 914 alternator, i got the other three wires hooked up to the relay board, thats right isnt it?, but i just cant figure out where that red wire goes.

Like JP said, it goes to the starter. Onto the same terminal as the BIG FAT wire from the battery.

Make sure the connection is all clean and shiny, and put some dielectric grease on it to keep water and crud out.
