for clarification, when you're measuring the rear toe with a string, each side will be 1/8" toe in from the string , not a 1/16" each side, total toe of 1/8. At least that's what you're shooting for, right?

If you are shooting for 1/8" total toe in on the rear, you must have only 1/16" toe in on each side....totalling 1/8" toe in.

You can use tubing attached to the bumpers to connect the strings to.

Make sure the car is level!!

I've been so lucky, I've done alignments on about 20 different 914's and I've never broken a bolt. I've always used an impact to loosen them at first, maybe that's the holy grail.
I'm sure that you don't need to remove all 3 bolts to add or remove shims, only 1. The shims are slotted for 2 of the bolts, only the one in the corner needs to be removed.
