Hooking up a electronic speedometer

I would really like to get a speedo hooked up. I found this one on ebay.

Can I somehow connect a pickup to get it working? I haven't found alot of information on how to do this. Seems I could do it easy with a autometer but what about with one of these porsche/vdo gauges?

why do you want an elec? the mech ones were used on all 901's and i think some 915's....

someone on the club did a writeup using a vdo sensor on one of the CV flanges....

wait for the club to come back up i guess....

I'm about to do the same...but I think I need to use a speedo near the age of my 915('80) for it to work? There darn expensive! Interested to know if a newer speedo will work...

You need something like this if you want to use a 911 electric speedo...

Clay, I'm using a Wevo tail-piece. Was told that the speedo sensor is to be located on the bellhousing cover(since the R&P is flipped). Have one of the new Wevo billet side covers made for the electric speedo. In your photo I see the sensor is on the tailpiece?....what year is it?:)

Reasons to want an electronic speedo: no wavy needle syndrome, many newer models (aftermarket VDO) have LCD odometers/tripmeters that won't break, many have dual tripmeters, no mechanical cable to break.

Reasons to stick with Porsche mechanical units: the aftermarket gauges don't match the other gauges. Used units can be much cheaper a new aftermarket electronic speedo and sensor.

Clay,

Any info on that piece. Manufacture etc.

Reminded me of a link I had in my bookmarks...
VDO electronic speedo

Yeah I was looking at that also. I would rather use a porsche speedo though. If I did deciede to go with all new gauges this would be a good choice though.

That is a electronic speedo sensor I bought from West Hollywood. It's a VDO part. It would work find if my 911 speedo wasn't blown.

You have to make an adapter from an old angle drive to make it work.

I bough this from a member of this board. Still awaiting its arrival. I have a 930 transmission so it's set up for this. I haven't had a speedometer at all. I would like to know what speed I am going on the freeway, along with checking fuel use. I can likely program my EFI a bit cleaner for freeway driving by tracking fuel use.
