1974 1.8 Starter Removal

Anybody got any suggestions for removing the top starter flange nut. Haynes says is accessible from the engine compartment, it is not. I can't get a 17mm open end wrench or a socket on it, love to hear from somebody that has done this before. By the way it's a 1974 stock 1.8.

never had any problems with that nut. remove the air-filter for easier access. open end wrench will do just fine ...

Thanks Andy. When I first looked it, didn't look like there is any access from the engine compartment, I'll take another look.

It is not a 17mm, I believe it is a 15mm, only used in the one place. The bolt head is held by the starter.

You may have to put a socket with a looong extension on the top bolt by the starter. I changed mine, and the old starter had a raised area that prevented the bolt head from turning. New starter(Upgrade to 911, 1.5 hp unit)did not have this.
