2006 Rust Fix-A-Thon

Being held in Louisville,KY on June 1 2006. It will be at my house and our very own grasshopper will be there teaching me what to do.

I have a welder to use, and I think David W. was going to come and bring his.

I want to get my car inside for the work (inside garage).

Barry I did get your pm after all....

ok, what does everyone think we should have, before we get there?? I need a list, cause I dont want to get there, and just happen to forget something that you cant find locally. I will provide:
Repair panels
sheet metal(18g and 20g)
cutting tools
welder if necessary

I might provide:
other tools, if we can carry them
sandblaster, but i think it would be way to messy

Things I wont provide, but I think we need:
Heavy plastic sheet, to protect the rest of the interior
Por15 or other similar products, since you will be using it as a daily drive, and driving in the rain..
What else?? I know I am missing stuff....

bd1308 05-15-2006 06:26 PM

The welder will be here...I need to check with my source.

It's a nice welder too...

I have a tarp for teh interior protection (not a HIGH priority at all)

Nix the sandblaster...I dont really see the required reason why it would be needed....unless you wanted to clean rust off of stuff. But a grinding wheel works good too.

I am goign to POR15 and metalready EVERYTHING that gets rained on or not looked at for 30 years at a time.

I *THINK* we'll need to figure out how to reattach the passenger side floorpan to the long...I might have to buy those pieces....

Just when I needed that pink parts car...its gone :(

June 1 sounds good. I am pretty sure I can make it. I can bring my welder. Its a 110 v still set up for flux core. I might have the gas converson by then. I guess you have hand tools, 4 jack stands, floor jack available. Do you have an air compressor? I can bring electric grinder, sawsall. It would help if you got a couple of spotweld cutters. 3/8 work well. Not sure if Sears have them. If you can locate a Snapon truck they have them.

Wire brush to clean up rusty metal or get paint off of things you will be welding to. A cup brush in a drill works pretty well.

Weld-through primer of some type.

A FIRE EXTINGUISHER. More than one would be good. Not dry-chem, though, as that stuff is not good for magnesium, aluminum, or wire insulation (among other stuff). The Halon and Halon substitutes are good, CO2 will probably work in quantity, and even a good old bucket of water (and a hose hooked up nearby) can work.

Rags. You can soak them in water to cool stuff off, and of course rags are always useful when you work on cars.

Copper bar. Works as a heat-sink, I think? (See an earlier post about using it as a backer when you're filling gaps with weld.)

bd1308 05-16-2006 05:00 AM

who has a fire extinguisher? I have like a tiny one, dry-chem i believe...

Buckets of water will be there....

Barry do you have any POR15 that is extra? I can buy metal ready and purchase your left-over POR15...

I bought a product at a swap meet, forgot what it is called, but it is all still sealed up. It was 75 for four cans of the stuff. One was just a pure application, two you mixed, and one was a dilutant. I can bring that if you would like. The guy gave me all there excuses why it is better than Por15... from his examples, it looked pretty good.

bd1308 05-16-2006 07:11 PM

bring it...as long as it works. :)

I won't be there but bought this stuff called MetalPrep 79 by Henkel Technologies. This stuff is concentrated (3-1) mix but is so much cheaper than the Metal Ready stuff by POR.

It works just as well in my opinion. Just got done redoing my trunk.
