no wonder there was no compression

so i pulled the heads of my 2.0 today, and just thought i'd share what i found. this explains why there was no compression in that cylinder!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1147747466.jpg
really wanted to rebuild the top end anyway....

Joe Sharp 05-15-2006 07:05 PM

And the other side?

Ya know, whenever the valve seats fall out on my car, I just put 'em back in the glove box... ;)

A head rebuild shouldn't cost too much. I think for $200 and change FAT or RIMCO can do a full workup. That's new guides, new seats, maybe new intake valves ($12-ish per valve if you go stainless) and a 'cleanup' on the ports. And they're both in Santa Ana (north of you).

Just be certain the heads they give you are the heads you gave them...

Acox914 05-15-2006 07:08 PM

yummy! dropped seat :p

whats the valve tip look like?

rcrgrl 05-15-2006 07:34 PM

yeah - this is the second time i've done this to one of my cars...
haven't had time to pull the other side yet, but way back when i did the compression test it looked good (150 on #3&4).

my dad's shop is in anaheim, so Santa Ana's not a reach.....

didn't look at the valve tip - kinda ran out of time tonight. i'll keep y'all posted though!

Who are you kidding and when did you last price out the cost of rebuilding heads?

Kevin Powers 05-16-2006 07:28 AM

really aaron!!! i hope what looks like a crack in between the exh and intake valve isn't. on my screen it looks like the combustion chamber near the plug/intake valve is blended. old weld? time will tell. good luck.

Would you like some of what I'm drinking? http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/...s/beerchug.gif

That was for a pair of 1.8 or 2.0 heads, year and a half ago. It's where I almost sent the heads I sold (this year) because it was 1/5th the price of the shop I used (Ollie's Machine Co.)

Love some.

Rimco quoted me ~$700/pair for 2.0 head rebuild (dropped valve seat) a year and a half ago. This was sight unseen. I expect prices only go up from there after they receive and inspect.

I ended up having them rebuilt elsewhere for about double that cost (lots of crack welding, all new OEM valves, etc, etc).

I'd sure never use a shop that charged 200 bucks to repair a set of T4 heads. They know what their work is worth, I guess. The last set of 1.7 heads I had done was 1500 bucks, including the valves, and it took 4 cores to get 2 that were workable. The Cap'n

gonna pull the other side and check it too. also want to check the rod bearings to be sure the bottom end is solid.....then i'm taking it to a guy i know in anaheim.
..... looks like i'll be selling parts to pay for my heads. anybody need a salvage title rolling chasis/parts car? never mind, maybe i'll win the lottery...
ps- don't tell my husband!

Had my 2.0 heads done by Rimco in '04 for $855.00.

New valves, seats, guides, springs and all cracks repaired.

Race: Last year I did a set at RIMCO and it was $1200 without any seats.

$1200 would get you about 1/2 way to a complete Subaru conversion :p

seriously, for a few hundered more bucks, I'd go with the brand new castings that Jake has on his site.....

Joe Sharp 05-16-2006 04:27 PM

1/4 of Trekor's -6 conversion.

The guy I use for cylinder head rebuilding rejects the majority of T4 heads as beyond repair, and he's had 35-40 years of aluminum head repair experience. Sometimes it doesn't matter how good a welder you are, it still can't be done.
