I need to weld up the mounting bar on my transmission rear cover which came to light upon cleaning. What is the material made of so I can get it welded?

If the bar is part of the transmission casting, and the casting weighs almost nothing, it is magnesium. Yes, you can find people to weld it, but it seems to be a PITA to find magnesium weld rods or wire. I used a VW shop in Raleigh NC to weld a crack around the clutch housing of my tranny.
No, it won't catch fire. Mag is an excellent heat sink and conducts heat out faster than a welder can pump it in (unless it is Bubba). The only way to ignite it is to pump a large amount of heat into a very thin strip like a lathe turning. Paint it after the weld as the magnesium pickle coating will be destroyed. Magwheezium does like to oxidize! Good luck, Ken Wales |
