Excessive Heat in Front Wheel
I noticed lately I am getting excessive heat out of my front driver side wheel from simple running down a few blocks for a cup of coffee and back.
The car rolls fine and evenly in neutral. My tire isn't rubbing at all. The heat seems to come from the wheel and not the rotor but... Is it my front caliper or wheel bearings? Sway bar problem? Bad shock? The car rolls straight. I have got a real bad back so I only got one shot at this. ![]()

Usually means front pads are dragging. Jack it up and see if the wheel turns freely. If not, pull the pads and "exercise" the pistons by applying the pedal with blocks of wood a little thinner than the pads placed between the caliper and the rotor. Carefully pry the pistons back in and repeat several times. If that doesn't solve the problem, time for a rebuilt caliper.

Typically this is a result of the caliper sticking, and dragging brakes, as has been suggested. However, if the heat is more in the tire than the rim or the brakes it could be the belts shifting within the tire. You can sometimes see the tire bulging in funny ways when this happens. You won't notice the drag from the brakes if you spin the tire off of the ground, but you should see the tire wobble.
