Ampmeter hook-up ?

My car is a 1972 914 with a 911 motor.

There are two small leads and one big lead, leading from the alternator to the positive side of the battery. How do I hook up an amp meter to the system??

I sent all the leads from the alternator (the same ones that used to go to the positive side side of the battery) to the "L" side of the amp meter. I sent the "B" side of the ampmeter to the positive side of the battery.

Everything seems to work, but I'm getting a negative reading and NO CHARGE! The needle just sits on zero.

Thanks for any help you can provide..!

Scott
