Is 400 ft. lbs. of torque enough to remove the axle nuts?

I found this 3/4" electric impact wrench at Harbor Freight for $90. It's rated at 400 ft. lbs. and the price is right for a tool I'll probably only use a few times.

Probably...don't expect a HF tool to last long.

What's the matter with a 1/2 breaker bar, a cheater pipe over the end and a fat guy stepping on it?

Only time you would NEED a impact is if the car is in the air and there is no drive train......

hey alfred...

400 should be enough... start soaking it with penetraing oil.... my 240 lb 1/2 inch inpact couldnt budge them... but a 6 foot pipe worked great....

Sounds Mickey Mouse....But I have used a set of vice grips on the axle to keep it from turning enuff to break the nut loose.

i borrowed a elect impact a few days ago (craftsman brand). i don't know what the rating was. i had sprayed the nuts a few times over a week with aero kroil. they ran off in nothing flat. i was stunned!! no bolting up the wheel to some brace/stopping device and a breaker bar with some monster piece of extension pipe. buy a 30mm impact socket and just check your local tool rental bizs for the impact.

Just something I'm trying. If I can make it work, I'll post some pics.

Thanks for the advice. Anyone know where I can get aerokroil in Canada? I think Walmart has PBlaster.

www.kanolabs.com. i bought it directly from kano labs the first time. pb blaster is excellent too. i might add i didn't resort to any torch to heat the nuts up.

Aren't those impact wrenches great. I didn't have a compressor or impact wrenches for many years. Finally bought them a few years ago and I'm still amazed at the crap I went through before that...
