I have a '74 2.0 L that is stock except for a Pertronix Ignitor instead of points.
My question is what type of coil are you guys using? I have a coil that came from my FLAPS. I know that a Bosche Blue Coil came on the engine. Would an upgrade to a higher voltage output coil (45,000 V) help with gas mileage, smoother engine, and a little more performance with our beloved 914's? Also, what is the output voltage of the Bosche Blue Coil? Thanks Pritchard |

I'm running Pertronix's Ignitor, coil, and 7mm wires, and can say I've never had any problems. For relatively stock applications you're looking more for reliability of spark verses absolute (maximum) intensity. The Bosch Blue Coil puts out approximately 30,000V, whereas the Pertronix coil humps 40,000V.
The argument will ensue that the Pertronix module is junk (I disagree), that it can't handle 40KV+ coils (what for?), and that you need a nuclear ignition system (i.e. Crane, MSD, NASA, etc.) with 8mm stovepipe. If the Blue Coil is working and you're happy, don't fix an unbroken system. If you wanna bump it up a smidge (squeezing every little bit helps), a 40KV coil like the Pertronix unit is fine. |

My experience,
I have the Pertronix unit, Bosch Blue coil and 7mm wires. Everything runs great. I have heard of others having probs with the Pertronix ignitions. Not me. ------------------ Herb '72 1.7 Tangerine 'Teen '74 2.0 Red Rustmobile |

Thanks for the input. I might just try a higher powered coil, for the fun of it!
I had a problem with my Pertronix Ignitor about a year ago. It just quit working. I called the company and they replaced it No Questions Asked. Thanks again for the input. Pritchard |

I've had the Pertronix ignitor for about two years, and I think it's money well spent. Also: Bosch Blue coil and $17 Pep Boys sparkplug wires. The Bosch coil seemed to improve the idle smoothness noticeably.
After installing the Pertronix module, I slipped the original points & condensor into my trunk toolkit, just in case. I hope I never have to put them back in, but it's an excellent peace-of-mind thing. |
