electrical problem

My fuel gauge dies every time I touch the brakes. Suddenly it stopped working altogether. I've tried unplugging the brake light switch, but no help. Pulled the gauge and found no power coming through the white w/red trace wire. Anyone been here before? Thanks in advance for any help!

My guess is that you have a break or corrosion (high resistance) in one of the wires. I would pull the battery get some test clips and start looking for a break if it stopped working all together. (Test clips on the measuring device, the other on what ever else the wire should attach to w/ a VOM that beeps. Jiggle wires around). Any other gauges giving you trouble? The other suspect may be the alternator if you are having other phantom problems. Look at the charging voltage (current if you can as well) w/ the brake lights on and head lights. It could also be the battery. But I would only trace down the battery or alternator if other gauges are having trouble.
