Sporadic trouble shifting
I did the bushings, the fluid is topped off and it usually shifts fine. Occasionally, it will nick reverse going into second, or go from second to fifth, instead of third. It does not seem to matter what RPM I shift at, sometimes it does it when I am puttering along, sometimes when I am hammering on it a bit. What would this be, hopefully something along the lines of adjusting the shifter, rather than a teardown, partial or complete.
Besides that, it is running like a champ, new starter was a good move, even seems to run a bit cooler since I I got it tuned up right. The tach sort of goes in and out, but I am listening more than looking most of the time when I shift anyway. |
adjustment
I just dealt with that, so search for shifter adjustment or go to the tech articles and the adjustment is right there. HOWEVER I disagree with it based on my experience, so search in the forum. If you do not find it, PM me and I will tell you how to do it. Basically yoiu need a phillips and two 13mm wrenches and a little patience and all will be well. I had that sinking in my gut too!!

Which type of linkage do you have? The exact details of the adjustment are a little different between the tail-shift and side-shift linkages.

What's the condition of your bushings? Been underneath lately and checked the cone screws?

It is a '74, sideshift 2.0.. SHift bushings are all new, including the cone screws, it is all together correctly. I suspect I need to adjust the shifter, tighten up the clutch cable and see what that does.
It has been so nice lately, every time I go out to climb under it, I climb in it instead and go see how hard I can go around a corner without sliding too much. Not working tomorrow, so I will get it up in the air, adjust the clutch cable and get the shifter set up right, does not sound too complicated... What about the spring in there that is supposed to keep you from nicking reverse? Where do I go to get one of those, or am I already there? |
Turns out it was the cone screws. Don't let the fact that they are brand new and you should not need to use blue loctite keep you from doing so

Adjusted the shifter while I had it on stands, the way the shift rod is shaped, it causes the whole thing to rotate counter clockways, viewed in the direction of travel. Loosened the adjuster bolt in cabin, supported this with a floor jack and a block of wood, right at the last dogleg by the tin. Adjusted the shifter per Haynes, et voila!
It even goes into gear without grinding(More of the time than it did, I may try adjusting it with an asst) |
