Cold Air Intake???

i have seen some cold air intakes for the 914 and was wondering if it was wise to consider putting a cold air intake system on a 74 2.0. was also considering down the road a electric supercharger, mabey a 1 psi e-charger or something just to play with. but i was wondering if there is a reason that i should not do anything to the intake?

There was a post about this on the other 914 forum a year or two ago where somebody made a CAI for the 914 - I don't remember all the details but I think he lowered the intake temp by a few degrees and measure greater acceleration. People weren't too enthusiastic for some reason but I thought it was free hp. I don't even think hydrolock would be a problem for a 914 with a CAI.

Here are some results of adding a CAI to a 12V VR6.

I don't know why someone would think it a bad idea. They don't call them "Gas Laws" because they are physics "suggestions"

It will sound cooler(louder) too

Because for most (non-914) cars, a "cold air intake" involves swapping the true "cold air" intake from the factory with a short pipe and some kind of filter that draws its air from the engine compartment, where the air is hot, it seems to me. But it looks sooo rad or def or dope or whatever the kids are saying these days.

Why would you do that? Same reason you put a big wing on the trunk of your FWD car, never mind

i was thinking about doing a custom cold air, and doing the 914-6 deck lid screen for better cold air breathing. i had seen those 1 psi electric superchargers, that you can turn on and off and only being 2 amp motor shouldn't have to much added alternator lag to defeat all of the added 250cfm. but the main thing i was getting 2 with this was wondering about maximum safe air flow and air pressure for these little 2.0 motors.

Believe me, if adding some gutter drain pipe with an open air filter element on the end (A.K.A. CAI) was the major HP trick for our 4-banger 914's, we'd be all on dat, bro!

Now, if hacking away/removing your rain tray (which you should have during a downpour) just to feed recycled engine heat back into your CAI is an option, I guess you do whatcha want.

In all honesty, a good tune-up (which many ignore), clean filters all around (air, fuel, oil), and breakerless ignition upgrades with decent coils will negate any cardboard & duct tape CAI; trust me.

i was not planing on removing the rain tray. i was planing on turning the hole engine lid into screen for a larger amount of cool air. and as i have said twice. adding a e-supercharger. cooler air or not, which it would be, mounted up near what will be the back screen. a larger amount of incoming air pressure will increase power. and i'm not planing on useing cardboard and duck tape either. i was looking at a carbon fiber intake tube, charger, ad then the oversized double wide k&n filter up by the back screen.

the question i was asking was does anyone know intake cfm tolorances for these little engines. either in cfm or psi.

The electric superchargers are a complete gimmick - you'll only be throwing your money away. However, for anyone who doubts that a properly done CAI will increase hp, just read the article I posted above. The 12V VR6 (as an example) picked up 9.2 hp at the wheels which is a gain of 5%. Similarly, torque at the wheels was up 8 ft*lbs or 4.9%.

I just put a cheap "cold air" intake on my 91 Honda Accord and I love it and it is a great sound hearing that thing. I was wondering what would be wrong wth riging a intake that sticks out the side of the 914 and get some real fresh air? I know that sounds crazy but I believe somthing can be done about the old stock intake which does not look like it works to well. I am interested in seeing anything people have tryed on there 914's.
