Steering rack

What is a good tail tale sign the steering rack is worn out?
I have been hearing crunching noises when slowly turning tightly to the right mostly, sometime I hear it as I am turning slowly to the left. I replaced the tie rod ends with turbo tie rods 2 years ago and new wheel bearings last winter. Could the thrust washer not be snug enough against the bearing? Just curious before I get the car up on jacks and take the front end apart. At 120 degrees in the garage at 10:00 am in the morning I would rather know what's wrong before spending hours trying to trouble shoot the problem and sweating away 5 pounds. Help please.

never had a crunch noise from the steering rack.
but i DID have a crunch noise from a dirty steering column bearing!

the rack usually wobbles a lot when worn. unfortunately, you can only really tell by sliding it out of the car.
i even had one that "jumped". you turn the wheel, car turns and all the sudden there's a 20 deg. jump with no response from the steering, then it would "bite" again.

scary stuff ...
Andy
