Smoke trouble.
Recently replaced clutch and since then have had some trouble with white smoke coming out the back. I haven't really changed anything else recently. any ideas?

When is it smoking? If in AM, and only when first starting, it might just be a little condensation. I can't remember, but I think I have been told that white smoke might be something with the fuel injection if it is persistent

Where out the back is the smoke coming from? The tailpipe? The engine bay? Under the trunk floor?
Good general rule: If you work on some part of the car, and then something unrelated starts acting weird, go back and thoroughly check everything that you touched when doing the earlier work. All of it, especially stuff that doesn't have anything to do with the current problem. For instance, you probably had to move around some stuff in the engine bay to remove the starter when you dropped the transmission off the motor. So check all of the hoses and so on. --DD

Good points Dave, I just assumed he was talking about out the exhaust.
How is it running?

I see smoke coming from the engine compartment after stopping and from the tailpipe after stopping but the smoke from the engine bay is not easy to place the source. This smoke is not a lot of smoke. the Smoke that really bothers me and why I have had to take the vehicle off the road comes while driving and I con't exactly place the source but would seem coming from the tailpipe. The first occurance was a large billow of smoke. since that time it has left trails of smoke which seem to be more common when I am driving in a gear at very low rpm. it tends to clear up more in the high end of each gear. once I reach top freeway speed i never see the smoke but on streets when I have to go into lower gears it has gotten to be nearly every time I take off from a light. I have looked over the engine bay and hoses and do not find anything out of place. Also there is no fuel injection on this system as I have a turbo carb set up.
Thanks for your attn and advise. |

Did you take the flywheel off for resurfacing during the clutch job and did you replaced the main oil seal?. The leaking oil seal will let oil drip onto the heat exchangers and smoke when driving like you describe. Guess how I know.

DIdn't take flywheel off.
Heat exchangers aren't there anymore. Took them off a long time ago. |
