Trying all afternoon to get my old struts and steering off the 914. Sort of
stuck on removing the steering tie rod end from the strut arm. I have been trying to tap it down with a hammer and block of wood with no luck. ---any ideas--do I need that tie rod tool ? |

Yup, a tie rod end puller.
The type and Kragens etc, are too large. I had one laying around and had to weld a seam on the puller mouth to get it closer to the 11/16" opening that Automotion says their tool has. Pounding on the end will only mushroom the bolt. -Rich Hilgersom |

"Pickle Fork" and a mini-sledge hammer... 3 - 6 lbs. Put the fork at the seam where tie-rod bushing mates to the steering arm coming off the strut.
Hit it harder than you think you should and then when it doesn't seem to come off at first..... Hit it even harder still.... It will eventually pop out. Installation is of course a lot easier. - Dave |

If there is an autozone near you, it is possible to rent the tie rod tool. Assuming it works.

Pickle fork worked for me, after a TON of pounding. Should have paid heed to the "Get a bigger hammer" adage, cause I used a regular claw hammer and it took about 30 blows. You think it's never gonna come off and then....plink!...off it comes. Good luck!

I cannot believe that Autozone has that dumb of a policy. When I go to there to borrow something, they charge me the cost of the tool and then pay me back when I bring it back. Strange??
Sounds like some one has come up with a new business regulation, not knowing what the reality of their idea. |

Actually, Autozone rents their tools for free. When you rent the tool they charge you for more than the tool would cost you. You can keep it for days, weeks, months and when you are done - you return it and they credit the amount back to your credit card. I'm sure they make their money by people never returning the tools. However, if you do return it, then it's a really helpful system for their customers.
