Value Of Rust Free 914 Tub
I'm about to look at what is represented as a rust free 1970 Tub.
motor in parts no tranny no bumpers real straight in original paint. What do you fine gentlemen think would be a fair price? Hope I'm not stepping on anyones toes by asking... I would be building a 914-6 GT clone out of it. Thanks for your input. I know,,,Whatever I am Willing to Pay, Right... Anna |

seriously, *if*, and that's a big IF, there's *no* rust on the tub and it was never hit before and it has a clear title and the original paint is in fair shape, i'd pay a $1000 bucks for a really nice roller ... SmileWavy Andy |
Rust free you say? Let us all know how rust free it actualy is. Look for anywhere that someone may have done some dirty tricks and a quick paint over, especialy on the under body, inside fenders, lower floor pan under the seats, and hole though center console.
I bought a 'rust free' car that he painted over shortly before I bought it and had the rust coming through the paint the first time I washed the car. So be carefull. |
Just check the longitudinals and floor pans plus under the factory battery location. If those areas are pristine, it's likely the car is good. I sent a car much like that back to GA in trade for transportion to CA of an early 911 S I bought. He put a big motor in it and, AFAIK, it's holding up. They do exist......sometimes.

Since doing rust repairs on a tub can easily run a few thousand, and tweaking a tub on a Cellete bench can cost a thousand or more (what say you Andy?) I'd say $1000 was on the low side for a good straight tub. There a lots of parts to put onto a body, just not a lot of bodies to put those parts onto.
BTW, I'd like some data off of that tub while you are looking at it. VIN, and the paint code plus chassis # from the Karmann badge for starters. Date code off the decal if it is still there. |
Yes, "rust free" is not exactly the correct term, please allow me to rephrase. No rust thru with superficial surface rust.
I purchased the tub yesterday. I found a few pin holes in the trunk, very small area. Battery tray is bad but after probing all around the support area with an ice pick and wire brush... all seem OK. The seller included a new tray. Floor pans, hell hole, wheel wells & front trunk... all check out real good. I'll pull the rockers off today to check the longitudinals. And update after I get it stripped. Also, it came with its complete but disassempled engine if anybody needs any parts. I'm selling all of it off includes tin, starter, alt, dist, brain, harness...some F.I. I thank each of you for your replies, Anna |
I have a line on a relatively rust free ex-california car here in Huntsville.
Where are you located? Didn't know too many teeners in Huntsville hang out here. |
