Post trailering with blown engine

My first visit to this side of Pelican Parts. Considering a purchase of a 914 with a blown engine as a project car with my son. Can I use a half type trailer to get it home with 1 set of wheels off the ground? It would be easier to get the front wheels onto the trailer as it will need to be done with a come-a-long. Thanks.

If I were you, I would try to disconnect the c/v joints from the transmission and wheels. Might pose some problems if you were to put the car up on the trailer by its rear wheels due to the front being able to turn and cause the car to move around behind you. That could probably be solved by just making the steering wheel lock, though.

I would want to disconnect the c/v's just to keep the transmission from spinning, but it probably wouldn't matter all that much.

I just towed my newly acquired 914 from Seattle Wa. to Kansas on all four wheels without taking the axles off or anything. I just put it in neutral and towed it the 2000 miles. It towed straight and perfect and we could do 70+ MPH without a problem! It really couldnt have been much better. Considering my past luck I'm kinda surprised!GOOD LUCK Brian

There was an earlier post on flat towing, essentially it doesn't hurt, make sure the key is on so steering wheel will turn, trans in neutral and have some temp lights on the rear so you won't get a ticket. Good luck.

Cool

George,

I recently towed my newly purchased 74 914 from L.A. to Phoenix using Uhaul's Tow Dolly. You only need to verify that the rear shocks are in good shape, as the tow dolly raises the front end at least one foot (at the wheels) off the ground. My shocks were in good shape so I had no dragging. The trip was uneventful and the car rode on the dolly well.

You may want to disonnect the speedo cable form the back of the tranny, unless the car (like mine) has a faulty odometer.

I have two sons, and in the next 6-8 years before they're driving I hope we can build them each one.

Enjoy!

Gerard
