stalling

i'm so sick of this problem.....
car starts and idles fine - until it warms up. then it runs , but with a slight buck under acceleration and it won't idle, it just dies - and i can't bring the rpm's back up with the throttle. then when it dies, it won't start again, just cranks - as if it is not getting gas. any suggestions?
thanks!

Sounds like a basic tune-up / maintence workup may be in order just to get a solid baseline. Maybe you already have? That info will help.

What is the status of that, and fuel filter, and CHT?

Joe Sharp 08-07-2006 03:57 PM

Hey Race. Sorry to hear this is still going on. Is the car still lean? Thats is one of the things I didn't understand. Most problems cause the engine to be rich. D-Jet is why Lindas car is CARBED. But it works fine in my other car. Come up to the A/X saturday and pick-up Lindas D-Jet stuff and that way you can play plug-and-play and I'll cook you and yours diner.

oh yeah, background info - sorry - already did the tune up thing. valves, timing, dwell, plugs, fuel filter. the cht registers fine on the ohmeter - i've ordered a new one anyway as i'm out of ideas. like joe says, its running lean. still. but getting worse.
joe - if i can get it running i'll comeup - you know i want too, i may say screw it and come up in the celica anyway, just to be there and be cool
and carbs scare just cause i know nothing about them!!, and i really think the fi is better IF you can get it to work, never have in any of the cars i've owned, but i keep hoping

Well Race it looks like the A/X is out this weekend. Maybe we should have a Q at your place? I'll bring parts and an ohm meter.

yeah that sucks about the AX :(

you do know that my place is east of San Diego - not by dad in anaheim......

Joe Sharp 08-10-2006 11:43 AM

Yes, I know.

so when the car dies and you go to restart, can you her the fuel pump run for a second when you turn on the key?

rcrgrl 08-12-2006 11:56 AM

yes i can.

the symptoms you descibe would make me think it's too rich, not too lean. So first thing would be to determine which it is. Any black smoke out the exhaust? When my car flooded out (leakie cold start injector) i used to unplug the MPS and push the gas pedal to the floor and it would dry out the plugs and fire, then I could hook it up again and it would stay running. If the MPS has gone bad, it will send enough gas to fuel full throttle all the time. Part throttle it would probably run, but at idle, way too much gas. It would send black smoke out the exhaust to show rich mixture. Or if the cold start injector is open it will dump gas into the manifold, unregulated, and the slower the engine speed the more overrich the mixture. Again, Black smoke would be present.

Are we talking about the 2.0 engine or the 1.7? If it's the original injection system on the 2.0, it will run lean unless you put 2.0 injectors in it. If it's the 1.7, i'd check the part #'s on the injectors and MPS to make sure they are the correct one's, as someone might have replaced the parts with corresponding 1600 VW parts or something.

So that's the first thing to determine, is it stalling cause it's too rich, or too lean.

rcrgrl 08-13-2006 11:33 AM

oh, this is the 1.7 - the 2.0 is sitting on a dolly waiting for new heads - seems to be where most of my engines sit :)

i agree with you that the symptoms say rich, but an inspection of the plugs definately says lean. confuses me. plus it seems to be only a problem when its warm, making it a real pain to work on.

hardflex 08-14-2006 06:29 AM

Check the CHT when warm. If the CHT doesn't have continuity I don't think the car will run at all. I rigged up a rheostat once that I could vary the resistance to try to "tune" the mixture richer, since I didn't have PBanders page for reference then. It could be used as a troubleshooting device.

Rich + lean at the same time... Could it be a mixture quality problem? How does the spray pattern on the injectors look?

rcrgrl 08-16-2006 12:15 PM

ok, replaced the CHT & that didn't help. how do i check the injectors? can i do it in the car? by myself?
maybe the lean isn't really related at all - if not that, maybe it really is an electrical issue, maybe points although they look fine. what about coil or condensor would they cause this?

Dave at Pelican Parts 08-16-2006 12:31 PM

You can do the spray-pattern test in the car, but you will probably want a second pair of hands. You unbolt the injectors on one side from the manifold, and put them into glass mayo or baby food jars. Have someone crank the starter while you look at the jars. You should see a cone-shaped pattern, not a dribble and not a stream.

Put those injectors back in, and repeat with the injectors on the other side of the motor.

Race: Do you have a stephascope. And I don't care how you spell it. Listen to your injectors, when you turn on the car and move the throtle the injectors pules. They go click, click, click.
That wont tell you the spray pattern. You need 2 people for the spray test because of fire. Maybe one of you will remain calm enough to put out the fire.
I love the fact that your not giving up. I chased my tail on Lindas car for a year and a half. When your ready to go to carbs let me know and I'll tell you what I learned about getting good MPG.

the connector to the other temp sensor, the air intake temp sensor (i think) up by the throttle body, was busted. fixed that last night and took a drive. seems to be a little better, but it was late and i was afraid to drive too far from home- trying again this afternoon. if that doesn't work, injector test tonight.

Joe- i'm stubborn to a fault! i may very well do carbs on the 2.0...i'm heading for the dark side!

Joe Sharp 08-18-2006 01:59 PM

Race: Those are good traits. Hang in there, Somehow we'll get the parts to you.
The trip to the darkside is a dark tunnle, but here is a light at the end of it.
