I.m going to look at a 2.2 'T' engine tomorrow and am wondering if anyone has any comments. This one is apart, and is reported to have many new parts (incl P&C). The heads are currently being 'done'.
I'm thinking that a 2.2 would be OK if it is cheap, but paying real bucks to get someone else out from under the cost of a rebuild ought to make me look elsewhere for more hp. I think the rebuild was to stock specs, not 'S' or larger displacement. Any words of wisdom or thoughts on the 2.2? Anything I should look out for? TIA Dave |

I had a 2.2l T engine installed in my 914 last year and I just had it on the track (Mosport) over the weekend at a PCA Drivers Ed event. I was the only 914 in my group and was continually passed on the straights but the corners were a blast. With the weight of the instructor in the car I couldn't get beyond 100 mph. My engine is stock with Zenith carbs and I found that I was having trouble at the top of 4th and in 5th gear, the engine seemed to be chokeing up
as if it wasn't getting enough gas, I'm not sure what was going on there. I think I may have a problem with the fuel pump and I think the stock transmission could use some different gearing to make use of the torque being produced. If you are going to track the car you should look for a bigger engine. Already I think I need more hp if I am going to get the most fun out of track events. Martin Myers |

Thanks Martin. I've always wanted to drive Mosport I joined PCA UCR for that purpose. - I live in Whitby. What a shame to be disappointed after the effort of the conversion. Perhaps the engine will work better once it is sorted out. Weird that is was misbehaving in the top two gears only... not just RPM related?
I elected not to buy the 2.2 engine, (though it would certainly be in perfect condition) because of the cost vs hp. My thinking is that the the cost of an equally fresh 2.4 or 2.7 isn't really much more and the price of the 2.2, while probably fair, wasn't a 'steal'. Your advice echoes my own thoughts - always nice to hear. Maybe we'll meet at the track later this year. [This message has been edited by DDS (edited 05-10-2001).] |
