What Parts Are Missing from My Gearbox?

Here are some photos of the loose tranny guts that came with my '74 2.0. Can any of your gearbox experts tell me what if any major parts are missing? Also, how should I deal with the gears with surface rust? Oh, I didn't realize how light the case end piece and intermediate case piece is! Here are the photos:

WOW.. Best of luck there. I hope they clean up well for ya

Here is a bump for ya too.

try a wire brass brush wheel on a drill and 0000 steel wool. Clean clean everything and put it back together and run it.

Swepco 201 oil!

Thanks Bleyseng. The putting back together part seems like it'll be the biggest challenge. Although I do have another transmission to guide me I guess. Just gotta take it apart. Wanted to make sure I'm not missing any of the major gear sets, forks, etc...

You are missing the bearing for the intermediate plate. You know, the really expensive one.....

Also, the parts are really rusty. If it works for more than 6 months and doesn't whine I will be suprised.

73ess 08-24-2006 08:13 PM

Hmm...figures. How much does that bearing cost?

Clay Perrine 08-24-2006 08:14 PM

If you can find one, bring money. They don't make them any more.

I would just find a used tranny. You will pay more to reassemble the parts you have, and it will take a whole lot of time to do it.

When I took mine apart my outer bearing housing was cracked in about 4 pieces. I was able to get one (at about $300 I recall). However, I searched intensively through various bearing supply houses. A friend of mine in the journal bearing business was able to determine that the number stamped on the side of the bearing corresponds to a part manufactured for only one German company (forget the name - but obviously this was spec'd by Porsche). Additionally, we mic'd the bearing to see if another could be substitued, but we couldn't find anything matching its dimensions (close - I beleive we found one with and OD within .005", but this is an critical fit, so...)

Long sotry short, if you can find one, buy it, but try to call some bearing suppliers, you may have more luck than I did.
I am not sure on the availability, but I did get mine through Pelican if I recall correctly. But this was about 3 years ago.

As for missing parts, look at the cross-sectional drawings on pelican and match it up.

Hmm....just got off the phone with the guy who took the tranny apart and he says it's all there. I see a bearing in the intermediate plate photo. Is there supposed to be another one?

Only have the bearing is there. The races are missing. If they are still on the shaft, they are probably rust pitted and useless.

Ok, take a closer look and see if I can find the other half.

I would buy another core, cheaper in the long run..... The rusty parts will tear the tranny apart.

Bearing race: Second to last pic, beside the speedo drive?

mike95125 08-27-2006 10:01 PM

Dude, was that found on the deck of the Titanic? Seriously, the rus onthe pinion drive alone make me think it is a dead tranny. You actually have two of some things like the 1st/rev gear. Any pitting on most of those parts is a deal breaker. If you need internal pieces let me know. I have som egears and such that are beauty queens compared to those parts and I wouldnt even charge you an arm or a leg.
The bearing that they are talking about is available and is only about $150 now. (Used to be $300).
The most important part for you is the 1st gear slider. If it is still pointy and nice you just got yourself a $500 part. If it is not then you need a $500 part. I can usually get them for less.

That is some project you got there. PM me if I can help you and if you need some (better) pieces. I barter in beer, school books, fast food :D

mike95125 08-27-2006 10:02 PM

Oh ya, I see all of the bearings that should be there....not that that means anything. They all may be rusted.

bd1308 08-28-2006 09:26 PM

so Mike, you'll cut me a deal for some work in payment of cheeseburgers?
