Just Wondering

Is it any cheaper to build a 2.0 911 engine than it would be to build a 3.2 911 engine?

I havent gone to the dark side, I was just curious...

Marginally, yes. Something like $9K vs. $10K. Both are freakin' expensive...

hmm intresting.

Dave, are you suggesting that there ISNT a really expensive /6 to build?

Acox914 08-31-2006 09:47 AM

motor meister isnt expensive ROFL>....

a low miles 3.2 is like 6k...
to rebuild a 2.0-2.4 is an easy 6k.....

bd1308 08-31-2006 09:54 AM

I think i'll just stick to /4s

esp if /6s last as long as /4s do

you have great luck with /4's so far LOL

For that kind of scratch you could almost replace everything in the motor, or pay some high brow mechanic to take his time on it.

Some people pay a fortune to rebuild a six, some people get it done for much, much less. It all depends on three things: Are you doing it yourself, how bad is it broken, and how many go fast goodies are you going to install while yer in there?

I've heard stories of $6500 type 4 rebuilds which I think is totally silly, and I've heard of $25k six rebuilds which I'm sure is silly.
I did the top end on my 3 liter and replaced all the lower studs for around $1200. I also got about $300 of that back when I sold some of the special tools I bought on e-bay.

I did the top end on my turbo 2 liter type 4 for $350.
It all depends on what you start with, how skilled are you, and how silly you are with your money. If you start with junk it will be expensive. if you judge quality by cost (silly factor) it will be expensive.

If you start with something in relatively good shape, have enough common sense to do it yourself, and are careful with a dollar (cheep) it won't be that expensive at all.
And some sixes have been known to run almost forever.

I think I still may just build a 2.0L /4 and see how it does.

I just got my new job today, so I'm pretty excited.

I'm with you...toyed with going /6 and now that the house is projected to be 80% finished by winter I could pull it off.

but...i like the /4s and hell I have the foundation for a 2.2 liter monster....seems okay to me.

Some ways a six conversion is affordable:
  • You got most of the 911 engine parts at good discount or free.
  • You go to Motor Sheister*
  • You work at a shop and get parts at cost instead of retail.
  • Family member/friend is a machinist for high-end engine machine shop.

*Affordable at first, but not reccommended. The most expensive engine rebuild is the one that's done twice...

If i stay with fours, I'll never get to hear the sound of triple throat webers hissing along at 5000RPM

*shivers*

plenty of time to build/buy a 6.....i'd like to snag an early 911 at some point anyways.

Stock is a lot cheaper than "race". Building a zoomy race motor for a /6 is gonna run up that tab considerably.

MM is completly out of the question.

I think my next engine will also be a four.
