Throttle sticking
Recently my throttle has started sticking when letting off the gas. It is starting to get progressively worse. What are some common reasons for this. Clutch cable isn't twisted I already checked that.
Vacuum leaks,cold start valve, AAR? Any other suggestions |

When it's idling fast, pop the lid and check out the mechanism where the cable meets the throttle body. Rock it... rev it, close it... You'll be able to tell if it's mechanical/sticking.
Not cold start valve. Vacuum leak or stuck-open AAR would feed extra air and cause fast idle. But those are much different than a "sticking throttle" which is a mechanical issue. What RPM? How fast are we talking about? Is it Djet or Ljet? |

sorry DUH
73 2.0 stock Djet. It only happens when held down for extend periods of time, like highway crusing cable looks ok, does it fray or where someplace in particular that I can check RPM varies sometimes it is 2500 sometime 3000 depends on how fast I have been running. I can rev the throttle and it will drop back down or wait and it will eventually come down on its own. |

My throttle pedal was doing the same thing. Turns out the throttle arm was getting caught on the air filter housing, where they almost touch. I ziptied the air filter housing to the engine compartment body to keep it from interfering with the throttle arm. It's working.
You can also adjust the tightness of the cable to ensure that the throttle flap fully closes when the gas pedal is released. Oil the throttle cable at the engine compartment where the cable enters it's housing. It could be rubbing.

I lubricated the ball socket on the throttle pedal itself to get rid of my recent sticking throttle.

There are several things to check that can cause the RPMs to stay up. Pop the distributor cap and see if the rotor is free when you advance it and it snaps back easily. It might need some cleaning and lube. Disconnect the connection at the throttle body to see if the butterfly is free or carboned up by working it by hand. Hold the engine end of the cable and have someone press the pedal and let off to see how the cable pulls back. Finally you can open the tunnel and pop off the ball connection at the pedal and see how free the throttle lever is and how the pedal feels. You can also pull the cable from either end to see how free it feels and it should be very smooth, otherwise replace it. Good luck.

Mine wasn't sticking but was spiking when I came to a stop. Checked the cables to ensure they were not twisted several times and finally came to the conclusion that the clutch pedal was catching on the throttle mechanism at the pedal cluster. Took any slack out of the throttle cable and it has not happened since. Does not sound like the case with you, but something to check? It drove me crazy for a month until I figured it out thanks to teh board!
