Hey Weve all heard about the 914 6 conversion, the v8 confersion, the rotery conversion, and all those other ones. but what about that other rare breed of 914-8??? Anyone thought of a 914-8 conversion???? Is there a 914-8 conversion kit availible or a fiew places where you can get the crap to do it anyway???

You can go with a 928 motor. The real flat Porsche 8 cylinder motors are rare and expensive.

True. but i would like to see a conversion to make it like a true 914-8. just like they have for the 6. I dont know what the 914-8 engine was. if its a 914 engine specifically for the 914 or if it was the same as another (like the 6)

As far as I remember, there were two 914-8 that the factory made. One went to Ferry Porsche and I forgot who got the second one.

I believe the 8 in the two 914-8's were from a race car...but I'm not positive on the model number. I think one of them put out like 300+hp! I could be wrong though.

These were out of the 908! Talk about as rare as hen's teeth!!! If you think things Porsche cost a lot of money, try to imagine, if you can, the cost of putting a flat-8 in a 914! Sorta boggles the mind. . .

I doubt you could even sneeze in the direction of a 908 motor for less than $100K. In fact maybe a few times that.

Gruntie - where did ya get those pics? Pretty cool. I see that the rear shock towers are inside (engine side) the firewall versus in the trunk. I assume that means the trunk firewall was moved back?
The car looks a little 'worn'...was that a factory test 914/8 car or ??? |

That's the other 914-8, made for Dr. Ferdinand Piech (now head of VW, and 12% owner of Porsche). This one's got a fire-spitting full-race motor, in contrast to the detuned motor in Ferry's car. I saw Dr.Piech's car in the Weissach race shop about a month ago, having its engine out. Its a rough-ass car (build quality), on par with (or worse than) just about every other 914 I've seen.

I took the pics a few years ago at the factory museum, they very kindly wheeled the car out and opened it up for me. Here's some more:
As Stef says, the build quality is seriously rough. (So are the 916's, if you've had a chance to look closely at any of them). The interesting thing is that the car itself is obviously a hand built 914 prototype that they stuffed the 8-cyl into later: look at all the detail differences, the ghastly interior, quad headlamps, bonnet substructure, boot lid hinges, sharp corners to the windscreen aperture, rain gutters on the targa top, etc etc. The trunk firewall might be different just 'cos it was built that way, not necessessarily 'cos of the 8-cyl engine. I also came across Ferry Porsche's own car later. obviously based on a normal shell, with the added steel roof and for some reason red reversing lights. |

The big white things are the cans from the fire extenguisher. The 908 race engine did like backfiring and that startet fires in the enginebay. ( I think this happend a bit morer often ) Normaly race drivers "suck" in the fire by flooring the throttle. As I remember there is also a Oil filter in the trunk. The Piech engine was a direct 908 race engine with 330 HP. Dr. Porsche got a detuned version ( well got it on 19.9.69 ) witch featered valve shaft seals, Oil rings on the pistons, Carbs, mild camshafts ( Close to "S" profile ), massive flywheel and pumped 240 HP. The race engine "eats" oil and so the fronttrunk has a oilcanister and oilcooler and lots of oil. ( think 25 liter ) Piech car has a rod shifter ( when i had seen it some 10+ years ago ) while Dr. Porsche has a cable shifter. Piech car had headers and no heating ( Well some holes could have been from a Gasheater ). The Porsche car had heatexhangers. Piech car has 120L Fuel tank with cowl filler while Porsche has a 85 L tank with in hood mountet filler flap. Trunk is a bit more usable. The race engine had wild maners and didn´t liked stop & go while the Porsche engine was a "puller" like the later 928 V8. The race engine had a milage better then a Ferrari Dytona or American muscles. The Porsche car could run on Carrera 2,7 level. The Dr. Porsche car has the 916 Steelroof and a tilt up metall sunroof ( With crank winder ) The Piech car is from the partially handbuilt series. Most parts are different from the later stock cars. the lids have plywoods for stabilisation, Windscreen, Turn signal lights and rear lights are different to later and are handcraftet. Piech car has heatet rear window Also the cars both feateured double ignition with switchable circuits. The knobs are forward the middle seattray. The controllights are in the lower instrument cluster. ( Like 356 Carrera driver now it ) Piechs 914/8 was fastet street legal factory made Porsche until the factory offered 360 HP 930 and the 928 S4 came. Even the 934 ( Wasserwerk) couldn´t top high speed. Auto Motor and Sport made a road test in 1975 and the car was alowed to redline at 8000/min witch equals 275 km/h. I know that the race engines where alowed for short revs over 9000/min. Car has to small tires ( 185/70/15) for drag racing but needed under 24 sec for the standing kilometer. I think 0-160 km/h in 12 secounds. I think the Driver in that test was Norbert Haug or Michael Mehlin. The last time the Piech car driving in Puplic was at the Oldtimer Grand Prix to celebrate the 25 Year Porsche annual. The Porsche car didn´t made to mauch roadgoing. Mr. Porsche doesn´t liked the car to much well a rumor says he was saying that the guys could have do more usefull then spending his time and his money to make a usless toy. Dr. Porsche liked to use the Puplic Bus to drive from his home to office. Grüsse |

Sorry it was the 25 Year Porsche 914 annual. The car appiered togehter with Manfred Sommers 916 and was featured in Motor Klassik. At the 25 Year Porsche annual AMS made that testdrive. At this time the 924 was on his way and the Porsche 928 made testruns in Audi 100 Coupe, Opel Diplomat and Mercedes SL bodys. My X-mas wish list has a scanner, RAM and digital camera on top..... Dr. Porsche car was on display at the museum and maybe still is. ( Small museum and 2-3 cars revolving the week ). Give them a call, prefix germany 711 911 5685 Grüsse |
