replacing accelerator pedal

My accelerator peddal was very worn and wobbly and had to be replaced. When replacing it I found that the bolts that fasten this to the floorboard had a fair amount of rust and were not able to be taken out by the proper socket. I since then have tried a vice grip wrench and the bolts are to soft and won't budge.
I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what the have done.
I am open to any ideas.
Thanks,
Kelly Thorson

If you cant get them out you might have to drill them out and then tapp the holes

If you've got a Dremel tool, you might try a cut-off wheel to slice the bolt heads off. So much neater than grinding.

Yep, that's what I had to do. Mine got all funky from a leaky master cylinder. I drilled and tapped out to one size larger metric bolt. Hope your hinge is still in good shape!

Whoops, now rereading I see you have new pedal. Good deal.

I have never used a tapp and dye before but I guess I will have to start on this.
Thanks for all the feedback, I will let you know how it goes.

When using a tap or die use the proper drill bit according to the chart or package. Not so important in aluminium but very important in harder metals.

Use a good cutting fluid, at least use 3in1 oil or motor oil. Don't use penitrating oils like PB Blaster or WD-40 they are way to light and won't protect the die.

As you turn the die in and start to feel it cut turn it in one - one and a half turns to get started, then from there on turn back one half turn for every full turn in. What this does is clear out the metal shaving you are making. You will feel them break off as you turn back, if you don't do this you are wearing out the die and can also damage the new threads you just cut.

It ain't rocket scince, I mean rocket science.

The best thing to use when tapping holes or running a die is Crisco. It will asorb the heat and melt then lubricate very well.

Thanks for all of the feedback on this subject.
Just one more question.
Does anyone know the original diameter of the bolt and the original size for the bolt head, ie socket size.

Thnaks again

If my memory is still ok, the bolts for the gas peddle is 6mm with a 10mm hex. I think it is about 16mm long. I would use anti-sieze when installing and a lock washer...

Well...

One of the bolts goes through the floor and you can see the thread nut from underneath the car. You should be able to get some pen oil on that one. The other nut is in the re-enforcment thingy. I had to replace mine when i got the bodywork on my 73 done last year and the body guy just welded nuts onto the buggered boltheads.

So... if you know someone who has a welder try that worked good for me.

Otherwise drill and tap sounds good.
