You should save your money on the shift kit and replace ALL the bushing in the shift linkage. putting a SSkit in will only making Balky shifting worst. Steve

I was going to put in the short shift kit AFTER replacing the bushings and rebuilding the tranny

Reduced throw(leverage) makes it hard to get into 1st and increases the frequency of missed shifts. I would not recommend it. I am going to reinstall the factory shifter and check all the bushings. Put your money into something else. |

I may be the odd man out on this topic, but I like my short shift kit. I used the kit for a year or so before changing the worn shift bushings. Once I changed the bushings, I liked it even better. As far as missing shifts, practice makes "better". Keep in mind that our tranny was not built for speed shifting anyway. I just like the fact that I don't have to lean forward now to engage 2nd and fourth gears. Good luck!
Pritchard BTW: the installation is fairly easy. |

Hello 914kit,
I installed the Weltmiester short shift kit and the lockout spring kit on my 1973 1.7L about three years ago. I am very happy with both units. Shifting is clean and precise. I did not istall the units for fast, hard shifting, but rather to ELIMINATE nicking reverse going to second, and reduce the long distance throw into each gear. You will have to remember though, the shorter stick does require slightly more effort to shift (Especially first gear). If you are careful following the directions of both units (Kits), and as others have said on this forum about having the rest of the transmission in good condition, I think you will enjoy their benefits. Regards. |

The weltmeister is fine. I have it and would rec a weighted shift knob because you lose leverage but I like the short throw. Just make sure your bushings are good and shifter is adj properly so as not to hit clutch cable tube.

I am tracking my car and was hoping the short shift kit would help me with my need for quicker and cleaner shifts on the track. In fact I mashed 1st gear two weeks ago and was going to have the shop put in a short shift kit since they were working on the tranny but apparently I am missing some adjustment parts where the gearshift linkage enters the transmission so until we get those parts the shop wont do it.
Obviously there is some debate here whether or not installing this kit is advantageous. It would be good to know if any of you fellows with the short shift kit track your car and if that has made a difference. Thanks Martin |
